33 Tangents - Episode #65 - Why Are Many People Forgoing Vacation Time?
Friday Jul 26, 2019
Friday Jul 26, 2019
As we’re now in summer, many American workers taking vacations to spend time with family and friends. There will be just as many who won’t be taking any vacation. Research published last year by Kimble Applications (https://www.kimbleapps.com/2018/05/no-vacation-nation-infographic/) showed that 47% of those surveyed did not take vacation and 21% left 5 or more vacation days on the table. The research also showed that this trend is strongest with younger workers. Why aren’t Americans taking vacation? Why are people expected to check in while on vacation? Why is this seen as ok?

Please note: We’re taking short break for summer vacation over the next two weeks. We'll be back with new episodes on July 19, 2019. This episode was previously published on August 3, 2018.
This week Jim, Jon, and Jason discuss two different, yet related problems faced by remote workers today. The first is the concept of being “always on”. The expectation, explicitly stated or implied, that you’re always accessible via phone, or email, or a messaging platform such as Slack. The second piece is distractions. This could be the latest email that comes into your inbox, the tweet you just got, or the alert that just popped up on your phone. Both of these take discipline to manage to prevent being thrown off track. How can these be dealt with? What are some of the steps that can be taken to manage them?

33 Tangents - Episode #54 - Dealing with the Analytics Turnover Problem
Friday May 10, 2019
Friday May 10, 2019
The Analytics space is one that sees rapid turnover. According to Corey Prohens at IQ Workforce is that most who work in analytics, either on the implementation or on the analysis & insights side, move jobs every 18 months. This results in a feeling of repeated reset and slow progression. What are some other issues that are the result of this constant change? What can be done to mitigate the issues and reduce the churn? This week Jim and Jason sit down and talk through the complicated topic.

33 Tangents - Episode #39 - Investing in Consulting
Friday Jan 25, 2019
Friday Jan 25, 2019
When you hear the word 'consulting', many people and organizations often get a sour taste in their mouths. They have been burned in the past by so called "experts" or they think that surly we are smarter about our business than anyone on the outside.
But...there is amazing value to be gained from bringing in outside expertise. As a services company, 33 Sticks brings in outside experts to help us get to a level we couldn't get to on our own.
In this episode, Jim, Jason, and Hila talk about the importance of outside experts, how companies can get the most value from hiring an agency, and how service companies should treat their customers.
WHAT YOU’LL HEAR…
🔊2:40 Why do companies have such a negative view of "consulting"?
🔊11:00 When you look at outside help as a guide, rather than a consultant, amazing things happen.
🔊14:45 The importance of setting proper expectations upfront with your agency.
🔊21:00 Jim talks about his perspective based on working for several services companies in the past.
🔊26:00 Often times outside consulting can be the only consistency your team will have over time.
🔊32:00 Jason talks about the challenges of starting 33 Sticks.
🔊36:45 As a consulting agency, how can you ensure you are delivering value for your clients?
🔊41:00 You really should CARE!!!

Randy and Jason have been working together on a project using MapD’s platform and air quality data from Jason’s home state, Utah. The conversation starts off talking about the specifics of the project but then moves onto the broader topic of remote collaboration and there is even mention of a spicy sushi challenge from 7 years ago.

33 Tangents - Episode #21 - Less is More
Friday Sep 21, 2018
Friday Sep 21, 2018
We ran into some technical issues recording this week’s episode so it’s shorter than a normal episode but chock full of good content, which is ironic given the subject. If you’re the type of person that like to go above and beyond for your clients, the thought of “less is more” may be a paradox. How could doing less actually be better for both a client and your organization? This week, Jim, Jenn, and Jason dissect this concept and discuss what it means to them and how they feel it enables them to be more effective and drive more value for their clients.

33 Tangents - Episode #20 - Working with an unengaged client
Friday Sep 14, 2018
Friday Sep 14, 2018
When you work in services, there will be times you start a new project and the person you are set to work with day to day is not nearly engaged as you would like them to be or need them to be. What do you do in these situations? Is this kind of situation a symptom of something much bigger? This week, Jason, Jenn, and Jim talk through their past experiences when this has happened to them, the steps that they took, and the lessons learned.
