33 Tangents - Episode #64 - Is Unlimited Time Off Actually Unlimited?
Friday Jul 19, 2019
Friday Jul 19, 2019
There seems to be a trend with many tech jobs for the company to offer Unlimited Time Off. Is this actually true or is it just a gimmick? We’re going to discuss next week why people aren’t taking vacation, unlimited or not, in significant numbers. Are companies offering it as a benefit employees won’t use? How do you ensure employees take their time off?

Please note: We’re taking short break for summer vacation. We'll be back with a new episode next week, July 19, 2019. This episode was previously published on December 21, 2018.
We’ve gotten this question, in one form or another, many many times: I’m looking at system A and system B and they don’t match, how do we fix that? To validate that a system is collecting data correctly you need to compare it to another system. For example you would compare your Analytics implementation to your backend order management system to ensure that you’re conversion tracking is accurate. However these two systems will never match exactly and if you’re not careful, your validation can spiral out of control. If the wrong audience is involved, they won’t trust any of the data so this process has to be managed very carefully. What are some reasons systems will never match exactly? If they don’t match exactly, what is the point of doing this validation? How do you manage expectation, both yours and others? How do you prevent it from spiraling out of control? This week Jenn, Jason, and Jim discuss their experience with reconciliation efforts, how they can spawn more problems than they solve, and how to properly manage them.

Please note: We’re taking short break for summer vacation over the next two weeks. We'll be back with new episodes on July 19, 2019. This episode was previously published on August 3, 2018.
This week Jim, Jon, and Jason discuss two different, yet related problems faced by remote workers today. The first is the concept of being “always on”. The expectation, explicitly stated or implied, that you’re always accessible via phone, or email, or a messaging platform such as Slack. The second piece is distractions. This could be the latest email that comes into your inbox, the tweet you just got, or the alert that just popped up on your phone. Both of these take discipline to manage to prevent being thrown off track. How can these be dealt with? What are some of the steps that can be taken to manage them?

33 Tangents - Episode #60 - How Do You Develop Transferrable Skills
Friday Jun 21, 2019
Friday Jun 21, 2019
Description: A job that is in demand today can easily become obsolete in the future. As time progresses, industries can and will contract. Job automation has always been and always will be a threat to jobs, no matter the skill level (The robots are taking our jobs!) especially as AI is becoming more and more of a reality. This week Jason, Jon, and Jim talk about how real the threat of automation is to a person’s career. What should a person be aware of? Looking across industries, what are key transferrable skills that people should develop and how can they go about it?

33 Tangents - Episode #57 - Starting a Family and Maintaining Balance
Friday May 31, 2019
Friday May 31, 2019
The concept of Work-Life Balance started out like all things do, as something that is well-intentioned. It feels like that in recent years “Work-Life Balance” has become cliche and is used as a recruiting tactic employed by companies. Using Jim as an example, Jason, Jon, and Jim talk about how to maintain balance in your life and with your career when major life events happen and your circumstances change.

33 Tangents - Episode #55 - Dealing With A Client That Micromanages
Friday May 17, 2019
Friday May 17, 2019
As consultants, we’ve all been there. You come across that one client that wants to micromanage you as if you were one of their own employees. This kind of practice is unhealthy when it comes to employees and can be downright disastrous with consultants. What are the issues a consultant can experience when a client tries to micromanage the relationship? How should it be dealt with to ensure a health, productive relationship?
