As part of efforts to lessen the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak, everyone is working from home right now but it’s not your typical work from home situation. The rest of the family is also home. Some people have children trying to do remote learning. There are many different situations and people have been asked to adjust and find a family and work balance on the fly.
This is not easy and it’s definitely wearing on people. How can you stay sane during this trying time? How can you prevent the frustration from getting the best of you?
On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents, Jim, Jason, and Bryant discuss how their situation has changed over the last month and a half and what they’re doing for their physical and mental health.
Items we mentioned:
• RailCowGirl (Videos from Norway’s Bergen Train Line)
• Strictoaster (CitySkylines)
• post 10 (drain cleanings)
• Doctor Mix

33 Tangents - Episode #103 - Office Bullies
Friday Apr 17, 2020
Friday Apr 17, 2020
Every office has one and we’ve all dealt with them, the office bully. This person demands their items always be addressed first. They demand, they force, they demean, they throw temper tantrums. They’re the first to go to your boss, or your boss’s boss, or higher, to get what they want.
How do you deal with an office bully? Are they using this approach to overcompensate or hide something? Why does it feel like this kind of behavior is tolerated?
On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents, Jason, Jim, and Bryant discuss their experience with office bullies and what they did to deal with them.

33 Tangents - Episode #101 - When Should You Fire a Client?
Friday Apr 03, 2020
Friday Apr 03, 2020
We’ve all worked for organizations where we’ve dealt with toxic clients. These clients know that no matter what they do, what they demand, they will be supported. The concept of “firing clients” is often floated about, but can be seen as rhetoric.
When and why should you fire a client? How can you tell the difference between a tough client and a client that needs to be fired?
On this week’s episode of #33 Tangents, Jason, Bryant, and Jim talk about circumstances where it is necessary to part ways with a client, following a discussion around Seinfeld.

33 Tangents - Episode #98 - From the Archives: Billing Models
Friday Mar 13, 2020
Friday Mar 13, 2020
We’re taking a break the next couple of weeks and will return with new episodes starting on March 27, 2020.
This episode originally aired on August 31, 2018.
This week, Jim, Jon, and Jason dig into one of Jason’s favorite topic - agency billing models.
Traditionally, agencies and consulting firms bill by the hour. Every minute an employee spends working with a client needs to billed to them. Employees are also pressured to make sure they maintain a high rate of billable time each week. What are the problems that can arise from this? Are there other ways to run an agency or consultancy? What are the pros and cons of other models?

33 Tangents - Episode #97 - Making Conscious Choices When Planning Your Day
Friday Mar 06, 2020
Friday Mar 06, 2020
We’ve all heard the analogy of sharpening the saw. We know that approach is usually the best solution, but what about analytics and marketing organizations that are staffed to the point where they are beyond capacity?
Many times these organizations are built with too few people and too many requests. The result is that most ignore the long term best solution and go into panic reactionary mode. What kind of decision making can that lead to? Why to companies struggle with understanding why they maturation issues with analytics?
On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents, Jason, Jim, & Bryant talk through their experiences with this situation and they steps they take to deliberately plan out their day and week ahead.

Being constantly busy is often times a symptom of procrastination, though people do not feel like they’re procrastinating since they are working. Being in a constant reactionary state makes you feel productive in the moment, but it prevents you from doing the really important things.
How do you recognize busy work from valuable work? How does this impact a person in general? What does this mean for practitioners and technical implementers in the analytics space specifically?
On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents Jim and Jason discuss how people get stuck in this trap and ways to get out of it.
