33 Tangents - Episode #113 - Being Human at Work, Part 2
Friday Jun 26, 2020
Friday Jun 26, 2020
A couple of weeks ago, Jim and Jason tackled the concept of being human at work. The conversation focused around the idea of having a “corporate version” of yourself that removes any personal details.
On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents, Jenn joins Jason and Jim to continue the conversation and talk about being human at work from the perspective of not being machines. This year has been stressful and draining on everyone for multiple different reasons. We’re not machines meant to stamp out widgets. How do we deal with this? How do we support others? How do we express this to our management?

33 Tangents - Episode #110 - Being Human at Work
Friday Jun 05, 2020
Friday Jun 05, 2020
We’ve been conditioned that we need to have a corporate image while at work. Personal items remain at home and are not intermingled with work. Personal causes and beliefs should be suppressed and not shared.
The last couple of months have been trying on multiple fronts. People are scared, stressed out, and struggling to manage at times. The Covid-19 pandemic has required corporate office workers to work from home and home school children at the same time, resulting in the sounds of family in the background of conference calls. The recent murder of George Floyd and resulting protests and demonstrations have stirred a wide range of emotions in so many. People have inspired to break down the stoic corporate image and share their personal feelings and stories.
Why have we been told we need to have our “corporate image” that is devoid of personal notes? How can you be human at work and share what is going on personally? What happens to a team when everyone starts shedding their corporate facade?

![33 Tangents - Episode #109 - Talking Remote Work With Kyle Ladewig, CEO of Out Of Office](https://pbcdn1.podbean.com/imglogo/image-logo/2886256/33T-LogoW-IconOnly-3K_300x300.jpg)

There are many benefits to working remotely such the time saved from not commuting to the flexibility of where you can live. With that however comes downsides such as isolation and lack of connection with others. This week Jim and Bryant are joined by Kyle Ladewig, CEO of Out Of Office to talk about their solution for this.
Out Of Office started with the belief that you should be free to choose when and where you work, so you have more time for everything else. It is a fully remote, venture-backed startup that helps other remote workers feel less isolated through in-person and online co-working groups called Work Clubs.
While remote work provides flexibility when it comes to finding work-life balance, the problem is that pretty much all remote work happens alone. Even before the current situation, one of the biggest issues facing remote workers has been isolation and loneliness. Out Of Office’s mission is to give remote workers a great place to work and help finding people they can enjoy working alongside.
Highlights:
Items we mentioned:
- Out Of Office
- Report by Cigna on loneliness in the workplace. (Jan 2020)
- Paper by Stanford professor Nicholas Bloom about Chinese company Ctrip’s work from home experiment. (2014)
- Study showing correlation between loneliness and hospital visits. (1999)
- Paper by Julianne Holt-Lunstad that showed loneliness has the same impact on mortality as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. (2010)
