In March, many people were thrown into it never having done it before. 5 months later, companies that were hesitant about letting employees work remotely are now becoming more amenable to it.
On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents, Jim and Jason revisit the topic of working remotely. We’ve talked previously about how to be successful doing it.
What are some of the common pitfalls of working remotely? What are some of the negative side effects of it? What are some of the benefits (and not the obvious ones of not commuting, more time, etc)?
Items we mentioned:
- 33 Tangents - Episode #14 - Being “Always On” and Remote Work Distractions
- 33 Tangents - Episode #94 - Cliches and Business Speak

In 2006 Avinash published his 90/10 rule for success in web analytics: for every $10 a company spent on analytics technology, they should spend $90 on people to use it. His argument was that while companies had “great investements” in analytics they struggled to use it to make meaningful decisions. The cause? All of that investment was made in the technology and not those who would run it.
All these years later, we still see this with many companies. Why is it that a large amount of money is spent on the technology and the teams that use it are overwhelmed, stretched thin, and ill-equipped to use it? Is Avinash’s ratio realistic? What can be done to draw attention to the need invest in people and strategy to use the technology?

33 Tangents - Episode #118 - Enjoying the Journey
Friday Jul 31, 2020
Friday Jul 31, 2020
“Mountains should be climbed with as little effort as possible and without desire. The reality of your own nature should determine the speed. If you become restless, speed up. If you become winded, slow down. You climb the mountain in an equilibrium between restlessness and exhaustion. Then, when you’re no longer thinking ahead, each footstep isn’t just a means to an end but a unique event in itself. This leaf has jagged edges. This rock looks loose. From this place the snow is less visible, even though closer. These are things you should notice anyway. To live only for some future goal is shallow. It’s the sides of the mountain which sustain life, not the top. Here’s where things grow.”
- Robert M. Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
With today’s hustle culture, we’re told we’ve got to be constantly moving. We’ve got to be striving to reach a goal (the promotion, the raise, a new house, etc) or someone else will get it. We also feel this in tasks with work. “If I just stay up late tonight and tomorrow night I’ll bang this project out and then I’ll have some time to breathe.”
This gives us the impression that we’ll be happy, or better off, as soon as we get to that destination. The fallacy with this mindset is that we’ll never be satisfied and work will always be there. There will always be something more to accomplish and more work to complete. What is driving the hustle culture? What is attractive about it?
On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents, Jim and Jason talk about what it means to “enjoy the journey” with work.

33 Tangents - Episode #117 - Metrics that Matter
Friday Jul 24, 2020
Friday Jul 24, 2020
Tag managers such as Launch and GTM have lowered the barriers that existed in years past that made deploying new data collection rules difficult. With lower implementation cost, it’s become easy to justify “just one more thing”. This can cause people to lose focus on the data that matters and become obsessed with tracking everything possible.
On this week’s episode, Jason, Bryant, and Jim discuss differentiating between what matters and everything else. What are the metrics that matter most? How can you keep people focused on what matters and prevent the thought process of needing everything tracked?

On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents, Jon Narong returns to talk about mobile app analytics with Jenn and Jim.
Recently Jon tweeted about the analytics content that he’s finding is coming mostly from the web perspective. Why is that the case? Why does it seem like the content around app analytics is limited as compared to web?
