33 Tangents - Episode #154 - Data That Is Nothing More Than A Distraction
Wednesday Apr 07, 2021
Wednesday Apr 07, 2021
We’ve all experienced the situation with a client where we know the data they are talking about is nothing more than a distraction. It can be data that they have identified as needing to be collected or data they already collect.
When asked about it, you get the response that “just might need it in the future”.
On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents, Jim and Jason talk about their experience with this, the risks, and the warning signs that the data will either be a distraction or a new toy that isn’t used in 3 months.

This episode was originally published on November 16, 2018.
During a trip to Boston, Jim had a chance to sit down and talk with Todd Schauman, Head of Digital Promotion and Analytics at the Christian Science Monitor, who has a great deal of experience working in the publishing space.
While there are tried and true implementation best practices for implementing analytics for an ecommerce site, it’s much less the case for a publishing site. We ask Todd his thoughts on why that is.
With the cost of implementing, maintaining, and running an analytics practice, how does Todd make the case to his management? What are some unique options that are available to non-profit publishing organizations?

33 Tangents - Episode #152 - The Toxic Cesspool that is Social Media
Wednesday Mar 24, 2021
Wednesday Mar 24, 2021
It’s not a far stretch to say that the current state of social media is that of a toxic cesspool. Many would say that that the social media platforms that are widely used today started out with the good intention of enabling people to connect with greater easy and frequency.
Today social media allows people to isolate in bias confirming echo chambers. It has devalued relationships to where they are only valued by number of friends and number of likes.
On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents, Jason and Jim talk candidly about their feelings on social media and what it does to people. They discuss the positive and negative things they’ve observed with it and how they are both taking deliberate steps with it going forward.
How did we get to this point and where do we go from here?
Have you changed how you view and/or use social media?
How has it impacted your life?

Digital Analytics is all about identifying problem areas and potential solutions for a business? That doesn’t mean the space doesn’t have problems itself.
On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents, Jim and Jason talk about what they see as issues within the digital analytics space and their thoughts on how to address them.

33 Tangents - Episode #150 - It’s Our 150th Episode and We’re Doing It Live
Wednesday Mar 10, 2021
Wednesday Mar 10, 2021
It’s the 150th episode of the 33 Tangents Podcast and the recording session was live streamed on YouTube for the first time. Jim and Jason talked about the evolution of the podcast and all of the little steps that were taken along the way. They also discussed the analytics content creators that have influenced them.
Of course technology always knows when you’re trying something new and this was no different. Technical issues caused the episode to wrap up early but like when trying anything the first time you learn and make it better next time.

It seems like there is a great deal of talk about the importance of learning from mistakes. The problem with that however is that most people are so fearful that they do everything they can to either avoid making mistakes or to hide them when they do happen. People do not feel encouraged to take calculated risks that will provide opportunities to learn?
Why is this the case? Why is there talk about it but fear when faced with it? How can this overall mindset within an organization impact the testing organization runs and the degree to which the testing tools are used?
On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents, Jim and Jason tackle the topic of making mistakes, why people are fearful to take risks, why most organizations are barely scratching the surface with their testing program.

33 Tangents - Episode #145 - The So-Called “Cookie-less” Future
Wednesday Feb 03, 2021
Wednesday Feb 03, 2021
It feels like we have another round of “all cookies are dying” conversations happening again. Companies are being pushed to adopt some sort of server side technology now or all data will be lost.
What is actually happening? What is the truth? Is it all fear, uncertainty, and doubt or is there some legitimacy to it? Do companies need to jump immediately or is there still time to see how things develop?
On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents, Jim and Jason discuss what they’re seeing, what they’ve seen before, and their recommendations for those that are feeling pushed one way or another.
