We’re taking a break this week to spend time with our families during the Thanksgiving holiday. We’ll be back with a new episode next week, December 13, 2019.
This episode was originally published on November 16, 2018.
During a trip to Boston, Jim had a chance to sit down and talk with Todd Schauman, Head of Digital Promotion and Analytics at the Christian Science Monitor, who has a great deal of experience working in the publishing space.
While there are tried and true implementation best practices for implementing analytics for an ecommerce site, it’s much less the case for a publishing site. We ask Todd his thoughts on why? With the cost of implementing, maintaining, and running an analytics practice, how does Todd make the case to his management? What are some unique options that are available to non-profit publishing organizations?

33 Tangents - Episode #77 - Presenting to Executive Teams
Friday Oct 18, 2019
Friday Oct 18, 2019
Recently Jim and Bryant presented to a client’s executive team. These kind of situations can be nerve wracking and can make the most seasoned presenter nervous. For those who are detailed oriented, these kinds of presentations can be filled with landmines. Too much information or too little information can cause the presentation to spiral. Wording is critical as one mislabeled item will cause the attendees to fixate on the wrong item or believe there is a problem when there isn’t.
What are best practices when it comes to presenting to an executive team? What are things to you need to avoid and what are things you need to make sure to do?
THANK YOU

With March Madness right around the corner, you’re going to see many spending a great deal of time putting their tournament brackets together. Why does if feel like some of these people spend more time and effort on that than their testing program? We’ve come across many who don’t take their testing program seriously and just slap stuff together. There’s no planning, there’s no deep analysis, and the results show.
What do you do to convince people that to get the most out of a testing program, you just can fly by the seat of your pants and see what happens? Aren’t testing programs supposed to let you move rapidly so you can learn?

33 Tangents - Episode #40 - When To Give A Customer a Little Tough Love
Friday Feb 01, 2019
Friday Feb 01, 2019
There is a perception that you need to be a “yes person” to have a successful client engagement. In our last episode Jason mentioned that the low barrier to entry in our space is partially responsible for this. In order to have a happy, satisfied client, you need to give them everything that they want, when they want it. In actuality, however, there are times when you need to exercise tough love with a client. This can also be extended to the pre-sales process when dealing with prospects. What forms can tough love take in the context of an engagement or sales? What times require a tough love approach?

33 Tangents - Episode #32 - How Do I Prove Value To My Boss?
Friday Dec 07, 2018
Friday Dec 07, 2018
Often times we see the effort to implement, maintain, and use Analytics be questioned by those who aren’t involved in the day to day. Focusing on after the initial implementation work is done, many times management does not see the value in functionality that does not provide direct revenue. Once implemented how do you demonstrate and prove the value of the data being collected? How do you justify things such as software costs, the ongoing maintenance, and hiring of people to use the data?

Created and defined by GrowthHackers (https://growthhackers.com/articles/north-star-metric), “The North Star Metric (NSM) is a powerful concept that has emerged in recent years from Silicon Valley companies with breakout growth. It helps teams move beyond driving fleeting, surface-level growth to instead focus on generating long-term retained customer growth. The North Star Metric is the single metric that best captures the core value that your product delivers to customers. Optimizing your efforts to grow this metric is key to driving sustainable growth across your full customer base.”
This week Jim, Jon, and Jason discuss the concept of a North Star Metric, the value an organization can see by defining and measuring one, and some real world examples of where it has been used.

This week Jim was in Boston and paid a visit to The Christian Science Monitor, one of 33 Sticks’ clients. As part of the visit he and Jason were able to get time with Todd Schauman to record a podcast episode. Todd is the Director of Marketing and Analytics for the Christian Science Monitor and has a great deal of experience working in the publishing space. One of the things that Jim and Jenn have talked about on a previous episode was that there are many tried and true best practices when it comes to ecommerce analytics but not with publishing. We ask Todd his thoughts on why? With the cost of implementing, maintaining, and running an analytics practice, how does Todd make the case to his management? What are some unique options that are available to non-profit publishing organizations?

Once a testing and optimization program is up and running, what are the key components of making it successful? What needs to be done to ensure that it’s advancing and becoming more sophisticated? Last week, Jason, Hila, and Jim spoke about the important steps to take when starting a testing and optimization program. This week they continue the conversation but focusing the common pitfalls that can cause a test program to become stagnant or even fail.
