33 Tangents - Episode #137 - Showing Gratitude and Appreciation
Friday Dec 11, 2020
Friday Dec 11, 2020
It’s the holiday season and for many the time of year where they stop to reflect on what they are grateful for. In a work environment, how to do you show appreciation without coming across as an ass-kisser?
On this week's episode of 33 Tangents, Jim and Jason take another look at this topic that was covered last year and discuss the different shapes gratitude can take.

In the business world, there are two schools of thought about a person’s work and personal lives and it’s a constant debate. One side of the argument believes that you should keep your personal life out and completely separate from your work life. The other believes that combining the two help build strong bonds with those that you work with.
- Is there a right way or wrong way?
- Are there merits to both?
- What benefits can you see with both approaches?
On this week's episode of the 33 Tangents Podcast, Jason and Jim tackle this topic and cite examples from their career which have shaped their approach.

On previous episodes we’ve discussed how digital analytics does not have a seat at the big table in organizations. It’s an afterthought to development and management doesn’t care until something breaks and it’s too late.
On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents, Jason and Jim are joined by Dipesh Shah who provides his perspective on why this is the case. Dipesh is a Marketing Data & Tech Consultant with 12 years experience based in London, UK.

33 Tangents - Episode #132 - Consultant vs. Contractor
Friday Nov 06, 2020
Friday Nov 06, 2020
In many organizations, the terms consultant and contractor are use interchangeably. There are, however, major distinctions between those two roles. Each comes with its own set of expectations and level of engagement.
What are the major differences between the two?
What does it mean to hire a contractor?
What is expected when you bring on a consultant?
Why do organizations conflate the two?
On this week's episode of the 33 Tangents Podcast, Jason, Jenn, and Jim dig into these questions, discuss the need and value of both of the roles, and what they've seen happen when there isn't a clear distinction.

33 Tangents - Episode #130 - Re-examining Unlimited PTO
Friday Oct 23, 2020
Friday Oct 23, 2020
The concept of unlimited PTO has always been polarizing. Some see it as a great benefit while others see it as a bait and switch. In an episode in July 2019 we asked the question if unlimited time off it truly unlimited. Recently there was a debate on Twitter on the actual benefit of unlimited PTO which made us want to revisit the topic.
Do employees really see the benefit of unlimited PTO? Is it everything that is promised? Are there employers that genuinely want their employees to have the flexibility they need with time off? Do employers have ulterior motives with it?
On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents Jim and Jason decided to dive back into the concept of unlimited PTO and what it means to offer it as a benefit.

Working remotely offers a great deal of freedom and flexibility which can take many different forms. It can be working from various different co-working locations or coffee shops so the person is not always at the home office all the way up to taking extended road trips with the family and doing work along the way.
The problem that is faced by many remote workers is that they often get buried in their work they forget to take advantage of it. Instead feeling from the corporate office they get tied to the home office.
On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents, Jason and Jim sit down with returning guest Evan LaPointe, the founder and CEO of Core Consulting as well as the creator of Satellite (now Adobe DTM) that was acquired in an industry defining acquisition by Adobe in 2013. Evan recently took a family road-trip all the while working remotely and as his children attended remote school.

In 2006 Avinash published his 90/10 rule for success in web analytics: for every $10 a company spent on analytics technology, they should spend $90 on people to use it. His argument was that while companies had “great investements” in analytics they struggled to use it to make meaningful decisions. The cause? All of that investment was made in the technology and not those who would run it.
All these years later, we still see this with many companies. Why is it that a large amount of money is spent on the technology and the teams that use it are overwhelmed, stretched thin, and ill-equipped to use it? Is Avinash’s ratio realistic? What can be done to draw attention to the need invest in people and strategy to use the technology?

33 Tangents - Episode #118 - Enjoying the Journey
Friday Jul 31, 2020
Friday Jul 31, 2020
“Mountains should be climbed with as little effort as possible and without desire. The reality of your own nature should determine the speed. If you become restless, speed up. If you become winded, slow down. You climb the mountain in an equilibrium between restlessness and exhaustion. Then, when you’re no longer thinking ahead, each footstep isn’t just a means to an end but a unique event in itself. This leaf has jagged edges. This rock looks loose. From this place the snow is less visible, even though closer. These are things you should notice anyway. To live only for some future goal is shallow. It’s the sides of the mountain which sustain life, not the top. Here’s where things grow.”
- Robert M. Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
With today’s hustle culture, we’re told we’ve got to be constantly moving. We’ve got to be striving to reach a goal (the promotion, the raise, a new house, etc) or someone else will get it. We also feel this in tasks with work. “If I just stay up late tonight and tomorrow night I’ll bang this project out and then I’ll have some time to breathe.”
This gives us the impression that we’ll be happy, or better off, as soon as we get to that destination. The fallacy with this mindset is that we’ll never be satisfied and work will always be there. There will always be something more to accomplish and more work to complete. What is driving the hustle culture? What is attractive about it?
On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents, Jim and Jason talk about what it means to “enjoy the journey” with work.
