33 Tangents - Episode #182 - What Does It Mean to “Ride For The Brand”?
Wednesday Oct 20, 2021
Wednesday Oct 20, 2021
Part of the Code of the West is to “Ride For The Brand”. This means to be loyal to those that take you on and hire you. It’s not a blind loyalty, but one that is earned.
In his book Cowboy Ethics: What It Takes To Win At Life, James P. Owen writes:
“The cowboy’s greatest devotion was to his calling and his way of life. His loyalties naturally centered upon those who valued his traditions and counted upon him to uphold them. In short, the cowboy gave allegiance and respect where they were deserved and returned.”
What does it mean to ride for the brand in a corporate setting? When is it genuine and when is it not?
On this week’s episode of the 33 Tangents podcast, Jim and Jason take a look at what it really means to “Ride For The Brand”, how it is something that can’t be faked, and how it can show a person’s true intentions.

Customer privacy has become a sales pitch. Companies tout the security of their products alongside the other features of the experience.
Do companies really care about the privacy of their customers or is it all just theater?
Do they really believe that privacy is a key part of the customer experience or are they trying to do the bare minimum to meet regulations?
On this week’s episode of the 33 Tangents Podcast, Jason and Jim discuss where they think companies rank customer privacy as compared to other things.

33 Tangents - Episode #169 - From The Archives: How We Got Here
Wednesday Jul 21, 2021
Wednesday Jul 21, 2021
We’re currently taking a break for summer vacation and will be back with new episodes starting on July 28, 2021.
On this week’s episode of the 33 Tangents podcast, we’re going way back to the early days. This episode was originally published on June 8, 2018.
There are many careers for people to choose from that have a predefined path from beginning to end, starting with school and ending with retirement. What many of us have found is that Digital Analytics presents something different, a career and industry that is wide open with people from many different backgrounds and educational training. After getting frequently asked how they got into this career, Jason, Jon, and Jim decided to talk exactly about this this week. They talk about what they went to college for, what they planned to, and the choices that led them here.

33 Tangents - Episode #160 - Why Is “Grinding” The Only Way To Work?
Wednesday May 19, 2021
Wednesday May 19, 2021
Hard, honest work in which you create value for your company & clients alike and grinding until burnout are not the same thing.
Why do people think that grinding as hard as you can for an indefinite amount of time is the only way to go?
Why is there this cognitive dissonance when people hear of alternative ways of working?
Why are people shamed for thinking that you can have fun and gain fulfillment in work without burning yourself out?
Why is burnout looked as a badge of honor?
On this week’s episode of the 33 Tangents Podcast, Jason and Jim talk about their experiences that have led them to search out a different way of working and their thoughts on why people think that being on the verge of burnout is the only way to work.

It seems like there is a great deal of talk about the importance of learning from mistakes. The problem with that however is that most people are so fearful that they do everything they can to either avoid making mistakes or to hide them when they do happen. People do not feel encouraged to take calculated risks that will provide opportunities to learn?
Why is this the case? Why is there talk about it but fear when faced with it? How can this overall mindset within an organization impact the testing organization runs and the degree to which the testing tools are used?
On this week’s episode of 33 Tangents, Jim and Jason tackle the topic of making mistakes, why people are fearful to take risks, why most organizations are barely scratching the surface with their testing program.

In the business world, there are two schools of thought about a person’s work and personal lives and it’s a constant debate. One side of the argument believes that you should keep your personal life out and completely separate from your work life. The other believes that combining the two help build strong bonds with those that you work with.
- Is there a right way or wrong way?
- Are there merits to both?
- What benefits can you see with both approaches?
On this week's episode of the 33 Tangents Podcast, Jason and Jim tackle this topic and cite examples from their career which have shaped their approach.

33 Tangents - Episode #129 - Getting Started
Friday Oct 16, 2020
Friday Oct 16, 2020
When we have an idea, we envision the perfect version of the outcome. This vision, while inspiring, can also create a state of paralysis. We don’t want to produce anything less than that pristine vision not realizing that the imperfect iterations that come before are necessary to reach that state.
What is the difference between imperfect and incomplete? Why do we often miss that so many others had to take small, iterative steps to get where they are now? On this week’s episode of the 33 Tangents podcast, Jim and Jason discuss getting started and preventing procrastination.
