#272 - How Can Automation Make Your Analytics Team More Insightful And Valuable?
Wednesday Aug 16, 2023
Wednesday Aug 16, 2023
Many analytics teams are looking to be more effective with their time so it is spent more on using data to reach business goals and less on basic reporting. To solve for that, many are looking find ways to automate the routine tasks and reporting the team does.
What does it mean to automate aspects of the analytics program? What could automation enable for an analytics team? What tasks can be automated and what should not be automated? Does automation make the team less insightful by focusing on the routine?
On this week’s episode of the 33 Tangents podcast, Jason and Jim discuss how automation can improve an analytics and what it is able to unlock. They talked about how automation and new tools are changing the analytics industry and what those within the industry need to consider.

33 Tangents - Episode #82 - Data Hoarders
Friday Nov 22, 2019
Friday Nov 22, 2019
We’ve all encountered those clients that are so focused on instrumentation and the data they want to collect, that they lose sight of actually using it.
What is a data hoarder and how do you approach an engagement like this? How do you refocus a client and show them they don’t need to track absolutely everything to get valuable insights? How do you show a client that trying to track everything is not good and even futile?
On this week’s episode, Jim, Bryant, and Jason talk about their experiences with data hoarders and what they’ve done to show that there is no value in collecting data if it’s not going to be used.

When soliciting solutions to business problems your organizations has, you have the potential to receive varying solutions from different sources, both internal and external. When you receive a solution from an external agency, do you know what the core drivers that determined how the agency went about designing it? Do they have your best interests in mind or do they have theirs? This week Jim and Jason cover this topic while talking about current state of analytics and marketing technology.

When it comes to being a technical implementer, one of the key ways to provide value is through the deployment of analytics and marketing technology data collection logic. Putting a significant amount of focus on this can be a problem because the many times the value is fleeting. There is always something new to deploy and before you know it, you’re stuck in marketing pixel hell. How can you make sure you’re providing value without falling into this trap? Do all tag deployment requests carry the same weight. This week Jenn, Jason, and Jim share their experiences dealing with this and what they did to ensure their efforts were focused on the most critical items.

This week Jim and Jason are joined by Carrie Bourke, Director of Customer Analytics and Insight at Harvard Business Review.
Prior to her time at HBR, Carrie spent times in analytics leadership roles at Clario Analytics, L.L. Bean, & Staples. Over the last 3 years Carrie has been a partner of 33 Sticks and during that time she has taken a methodical approach to building out a new digital marketing ecosystem.
Carrie’s plan to build and add new capabilities over time runs counter to what is the typical plan to rush and get everything built in a short period of time. Jason, Jim, and Carrie dig into what led her to take this approach and the benefits she has seen.

33 Tangents - Episode #74 - The Document is Not the Deliverable
Friday Sep 27, 2019
Friday Sep 27, 2019
With many engagements, the focus is a document. Questions like “What is the status of the document?” and “When will the documentation be delivered?” are often asked. The document is viewed as the deliverable when in actuality, the document is not the deliverable.
The solution conveyed in the document and the process to identify and design the solution are the deliverables. This is a key difference, but something so many miss. Why is that the case? Why is the document the focus and not the solution and path taken to get to the solution?
This week Jim and Jason discuss the difference between taking a client on a journey that provides value vs completing and shipping documents.

This episode originally aired on May 24th, 2019.
Jason and Jim are joined by friends of the show and past guests Evan LaPointe and Randy Zwitch. What started as a comment on twitter lead to this conversation about new age-y business stuff; the trends in business that often turn out to be fads.

33 Tangents - Episode #67 - The Cons of Working Remote
Friday Aug 09, 2019
Friday Aug 09, 2019
In previous episode and through social media posts, we’ve made no secret of how we are proponents of working remotely. With anything, however, there are pros and there are cons. We’ve had previous episodes where we’ve talked about the benefits of working remotely and how to do it successfully. This week Jim, Jenn and Jason talk about the cons of working remotely.

Friday Jul 12, 2019
Please note: We’re taking short break for summer vacation. We'll be back with a new episode next week, July 19, 2019. This episode was previously published on December 21, 2018.
We’ve gotten this question, in one form or another, many many times: I’m looking at system A and system B and they don’t match, how do we fix that? To validate that a system is collecting data correctly you need to compare it to another system. For example you would compare your Analytics implementation to your backend order management system to ensure that you’re conversion tracking is accurate. However these two systems will never match exactly and if you’re not careful, your validation can spiral out of control. If the wrong audience is involved, they won’t trust any of the data so this process has to be managed very carefully. What are some reasons systems will never match exactly? If they don’t match exactly, what is the point of doing this validation? How do you manage expectation, both yours and others? How do you prevent it from spiraling out of control? This week Jenn, Jason, and Jim discuss their experience with reconciliation efforts, how they can spawn more problems than they solve, and how to properly manage them.
